Trolley Car Cafe—East Falls

Mar 15, 2012

If you’re familiar with the Trolley Car Diner on Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia, then you will recognize the first part of this restaurant Trolley Car Cafe in East Falls.  The kids and I went there shortly after our Indpendence Hall tour.   We were just in time because the winter hours on Sunday are from 9 to 3.

The menu offered a variety of selections,  the kids menu was very inexpensive with selections as low as $5 with a choice of fruit cup, veggie sticks or chips plus a drink.   My little one decided on the cheese pizza , fruit cup and lemonade.  My 11yo decided on the Kobe sliders with no lettuce and tomatoe just a slice of pickle with lemonade.    The nice part of the menu, breakfast is served all day.    I ordered the challah French toast with turkey bacon.   It was served with powdered sugar a slice of grapefruit.   I was a little disappointed there was no cinnamon or raisins.  When our waitress asked how was everything I did mention the cinnamon and raisins would have made it better.  It was too late but she mentioned that cinnamon and brown sugar was available because it’s served with oatmeal.  Next time I know to ask for those staples.

The location has seating inside and outside.  However, Sunday was a bit chilly so outside was not an option for us.   The inside is a little small so I wouldn’t suggest for a larger group.  It was a little tight for the three of us to eat comfortably.   Also there was only one restroom which was extremely extremely tight especially with a small child.

The restaurant offers takeout or eat-in.   I would like to try some other selections on the menu but may opt to dine alone or do takeout.

Comfort Food Day

Dec 5, 2009

The forecast all week was calling for rain and then snow. It is so early in the season I discounted the possibility of any snow. The day started off with rain and quickly turned to snow. All I could think about was how many days are there until spring. Instead of heading out for breakfast, it was a day inside. My little man prefers breakfast at home and he usually likes something different. He has already told me I should open a restaurant but he fails to realize I cannot run a restaurant with serving chicken nuggets with mac & cheese. For breakfast I decided to make french toast, using thick raisin bread, eggs, milk, cinnamon, allspice, vanilla extract and a splash of OJ. A side of bacon, grapes and orange juice & cranberry juice, oh I forgot a sprinkle of powdered sugar.

The snow continued well into the evening and it was time to think about dinner. Philly is definitely the home of the cheesesteak. When I lived in other places I never thought about ordering their versions of the cheesesteak. My favorite place in Philly is Geno’s in the heart of South Philly. When I make cheesesteaks at home I cannot use the boxed brand of steaks(sorry), just not the real thing. Lucky for me there is a company in PA, named Landis that sells sirloin tip steaks( 0 trans fat). A cheesesteak is never complete without a good Italian roll, a Philly favorite is Amoroso’s. I usually saute onions, green peppers, and red peppers with a slice of American cheese(no Cheese Whiz here). After reading snippets from the book, Eat This, Not That, steak fries are a better alternative to regular frozen fries. I serve the cheesesteaks with Ore-Ida steak fries- 9 steak fries are only 110 calories.

This is all the comfort food I can stand for one day so I hope the snow goes away tonight.
