After Divorce, Do You Keep Your Last Name or Change It?
When I decided to file for divorce, my next step was to petition the court to change my name. Why may you ask? In my mind, it was a way to disconnect completely from my previous life and start a new chapter. I felt like my married name was no longer my identity and to remove was one way to return to ME! I also had to search and identify this person.
Although divorce is bittersweet it is an opportunity for a new beginning. It is a continuous process of discovering ME, what I like, love and are passionate about on this journey.
Honestly, I never felt it would be an issue with using my maiden name versus my kids’ name.. I still do not see it as an issue and maybe that’s selfish of me. Guess what, I’m entitled to be a little selfish on this journey! My kids are in such a space of wanting me to be happy they are not phased by it.
It was liberating when I decided to change it. I closed those chapters and this is definitely my way of feeling renewed. It feels good to be in this space and I have no regrets for making this decision. Only my story counts on this journey.
