CHIP
Healthcare Coverage after being laid off is a topic worth discussing. The one saving grace after being laid off is my previous employer covered my COBRA for 6 months. As of October 31st, the family was without coverage. For the kids I was able to apply for CHIP in November. I called and requested an application and within 60 days my DD was effectively covered and my DS was covered within 90 days. The monthly premiums are determined based on your household income and coverage includes medical and dental benefits.
OPTIONS IF UNINSURED
In light of no healthcare coverage, I found ways to obtain necessary medical exams. By calling my OB/GYN’s office, I was given the number to Penn Medicine A recipient of care at this facility has provided funding for women who are uninsured to receive free mammograms. I also learned that Planned Parenthood provides gynecological examinations at a reduced rate based on a sliding scale.
COBRA
In order for me to extend my COBRA benefits, my previous employer sent me an application in January but little did I know there was a 4 month deadline to reapply. When I determined my ability to pay the benefits in May my previous employer informed me that it was too late to reapply for COBRA. My question to them is why is there any deadline imposed on extending COBRA if this the only source of healthcare coverage. I was told the federal government imposes a deadline in which to cover previous employees.
Lesson Learned: If given the opportunity to apply for COBRA; apply as soon as possible!
