Single Mom Chronicles: Mommy Splurge-Zazen Nail Spa-Bryn Mawr, PA

Jul 19, 2015

ZazenNailSpajune2015

What is your monthly mommy splurge?  For me, it’s a monthly pedicure!!!! Bryn Mawr is a  town that I frequent for my favorite consignment store, Green Street Consignment.    On my last visit I realized there was a new nail bar that offers organic products.    Personally the one drawback of going to a nail salon and having to inhale the fumes from the products.

My manicure and pedicure go to place is Princess Nails in Ardmore, PA.    For the past 4 years this is my go to place  for my pedicure and manicure especially when I decided to remove my acrylic tips(waste of good money).    The pedicures are $28 and include a scrub, hot towel, foot and leg massage, and hot stones.   They also offer OPI, Essie, gel and  organic based nail products.

For the sake of experiencing something new I decided to try Zanzen Spa in Bryn Mawr.   The other location is in West Chester, PA.    My DD and I arrived 10 minutes before our 1:00 appointment.  We were instructed to pick our polish which was the Zoya brand.  Shortly after we were seated in our chairs by 1:00.   The spa is very clean with a relaxed feel.    In addition to manicures and pedicures, the spa offers blow out services.

Due to sanitizing concerns the spa does not use foot bowls with jets, each client soaks their feet in a bowl underneath the chairs.   I do not recall if the chairs massage features for your back and shoulders.   Each technician removed our polish, then soaked our feet briefly before the scrub was applied.   After drying our feet the technician applied the Zoya polish.    I remember looking at my phone while sitting under the foot dryer and it was only 1:13.   Our pedicures were less than 30 minutes.   The cost for a basic pedicure was $33 and the princess pedicure for my daughter was $20 (includes 2 designs).  My daughter selected one of those crazy colors with the sparkles so she was unable to get 2 designs.  This defeated the purpose of the princess pedicure.   After tipping the technicians, this was over $60.

The reason I treat myself once a month to a pedicure is for relaxation and look I forward to the foot and leg massage.   Some of the pluses  of Zazen was no irritating odors from chemicals and the technicians were very friendly.   My biggest disappointment was no foot and leg massage or warm towel and    When I checked my feet later in the evening my heels felt really dry and cracked.   A good pedicure is all about the amount of time spent with scrub, buffing the dry spots on my heels    For me a good pedicure is all about the type of scrub and the moisturizing products used on my dry skin.  For the cost of $33 I feel the pedicure was too short and the products were not moisturizing enough for my skin.   The use of organic products is not enough to have me return.   I miss all the extras of my basic pedicure at Princess Nails!!!!  Most of the clients at Princess have natural nails so there is hardly ever the odor of acrylic.

Sorry Zanzen it looks like I’m heading back to Princess Nails!

What’s New: Personally by Ani! Consignment Store

Aug 4, 2014

Did I ever write how I hate to pay full price for retail items?   A few months ago I wandered into a consignment shop in Ardmore and was thoroughly excited.    The selection of designer shoes, handbags, dresses, blouses, skirts, and evening wear that was reasonably priced.   There was also a gizillion pieces of jewelry to choose from like oversized cocktail rings, bracelets, earrings, and belts.

Yesterday I bought 3 items for $100, a pair of black elastic strap Charles David wedges(look brand new, never worn), a BCBGMaxAzria for under $50 and an off white bubble dress for less than $20.   This dress pairs well with the wedges.   These were truly end of summer great finds.
