Nov 30, 2012

image: cocoafab.com

I was listening to The Steve Harvey morning show this week and Angela Burt Murray was on to promote her new website, CocoaFab.  My ears were definitely at attention especially when I heard the name, too cool!   Angela’s name may ring a bell if your an Essence reader.  When she left Essence I followed her on Twitter to keep up with the latest.

I also remember her tweeting me a question in response to one of my tweets….as the discussion was on reality tv…..woot woot!    After perusing the website, I am a fan.    It is a really well put together site with everything from celebrity news to fashion and everything in between.

You can check out the site at CocoaFab, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do…….

Parenting: Milk + Bookies

Nov 29, 2012

Parents,

I love teaching kids to give back  especially when you can make the activity or event fun-filled.   It’s a win-win when fun comes with learning a valuable lesson on giving back to your community.

In the past week, I was contacted by Malloy & Co to promote Milk + Bookies, a nonprofit organization that teaches kids to donate books to those who may not have access to books.      What is really cool about the organization is you can host your own Milk + Bookies party, during a birthday party, school project, organization, etc.   I am inspired to host an event at my next scheduled birthday party for my little princess.     If you are interested in hosting your own event, please check out their website Milk + Bookies.   What is a glass of ice cold milk without cookies, cookies, cookies and more cookies!   The cookie of choice for Milk + Bookies is from Isabella’s Cookies  for your event order the cookies directly from the website.

If you and your kid(s) are free on Sunday, December 2nd 12-3 PM Little Marc Jacobs will host a Milk + Bookies event in NYC.  This event offers books to buy and donate as well as crafts and COOKIES!    The details can be found above and at the website, Milk+Bookies.

I hope you are inspired  to host an event in your community!  Don’t forget to share your pictures!

Separation/Divorce: Child Support

Nov 28, 2012

After two and half  years of being separated(divorce pending!), I have realized the topic of “child support” is like the elephant in the room.   I learned two new terms custodial parent and non-custodial parent.   Custodial parent is who the child/and or children reside with full-time and the non-custodial is the “other” parent.       My thoughts on the topic are pretty simple, handle your business!    It is the non-custodial parent’s responsibility to financially support their minor biological child or children.  Wow, was it a blow to me to know this is only if you are fortunate enough to engage in a process with a sensible and responsible individual.      Now for
those who are lucky enough to verbally agree and adhere to a financial agreement for your child and/or children- KUDOS to you.

The filing process for child support is pretty simple as every county has a te courthouse with family court and the paperwork is readily available.    After filing paperwork, a hearing is scheduled where the plaintiff and defendant meet with a coordinator to reach a settlement amount based on your income information.   Income submission is sketchy at best.   Realistically, either the plaintiff or defendant can present whatever he or she wants.    There is no verification for the income submitted.      If an agreement is not reached, then you go before a support master so that he or she can determine an amount based on income information submitted and guidelines set by the state.    I felt like it was a simple process and officially the end of another chapter.    One thing I realized again is if you are not dealing with sensible and responsible what should be a simple process can quickly turn into an arduous ordeal.     After multiple court dates with no resolution, the weight of the aggravation forced me to close the case.    I was very naive to think that an individual sitting oyn a bench with a robe aka the judge would somehow enforce orders given by the court.    One thing I ask now is why mandate orders to individuals? When there are no consequences for utter disrespect of the court.    I learned that you can submit whatever information you want to the courts as there is no verification process.   As the defendant, you can be ordered to submit supplemental income information and defendant can appear in court without this information.   What does being held in contempt really mean?    How is it that some individuals slip completely under the radar?  I also learned that as a defendant in a case you can petition the court to decrease payments, even when no payments are being paid!  There are enforcement agents assigned to cases by the courts and  to this day I am still trying to figure out what they are assigned to do?

Oh, as the plaintiff there is a website where you can submit employer tips for the defendant.   I assume this part of the site  is because some individuals attempt to hide income or deny working at all.     To this day I have no clue who follows up with this submitted information, maybe the enforcement agent?  If the plaintiff moves you can always open the case in another county within the same state, I found it to be the same circus.    The defendant showing up with  shoddy paperwork.    There are intake coordinators  assigned to each case and they sit behind a desk reviewing income paperwork without verification and determine the eligibility of the plaintiff’s and defendant’s ability to pay child support.    If there is no verification for this income information, how can a coordinator  determine eligibility?   How is this possible?  thanks to the structure of the system it is reality.  Now if the coordinator rules either party is ineligible to pay child support the case is closed.    In my case, the defendant presented income information that was less than my unemployment compensation.      If the plaintiff  or defendant disagrees with the ruling it is their responsibility to go back to court and file an appeal.   Next round, meeting with a support master and he or she will again attempt to determine eligibility for paying child support.    By now my patience are shot as I have no faith in the courts delivering a ruling that is in favor of the children!    When all is said and done child support is exactly what it indicates support for the child and/or children.    It is my understanding that it is put in place to establish a financial responsibility for the non-custodial parent.    The custodial parent has already established financial responsibility, so its only fair right?   A percentage of contribution is determined based on combined income of the plaintiff and defendant, number of children and the guidelines set by the state.    Anyone who is raising child(ren) understands the expenses involved for the bare necessities food, shelter, clothing and child-care for non school age children.    Granted this does not include the extra expenses incurred by the custodial parent such as extracurricular activities, class trips, school expenses, etc. My frustration level convinced me that the process is not worth the return.   However, after giving this some more thought I feel like child support is not a “by choice” but an “obligation” to your child and/or children.    The defendant should not have the freedom to spend his or her money on whatever he or she pleases.    If the defendant can afford to take vacations and indulge in buying unnecessary tangible items you can factor in  a child support payment especially if you are employed full-time for most of the year.    I totally respect those who actually take the system seriously and assist with supporting their child and/or children.   You obviously understand the importance of your financial responsibility.     I can definitely understand why some plaintiffs get so frustrated with the lack of enforcement that they close their cases and never look back.

Personally, I think this makes it way too easy for some defendants to get away with being a “deadbeat”.   This battle is not personal, it is about doing  what is right for your child and/or children.    I believe the plaintiff has an obligation to the child and/or children to be an advocate on their behalf.     Child support is what is owed to the child and/or children as a means of contributing to their basic needs.    What person would knowingly want to see their child and/or children go without?  or expect the  other parent to carry the full weight of supporting a child and/or children?     It may be years before I reach a settlement but it is well worth the fight on my children’s behalf!    The return may take years but until then I will continue to provide what is needed for my children!

While this topic may ruffle some feathers, I make no apologies for fighting for what is right and an obligation!

OCEAN CLUB HOTEL, CAPE MAY, NJ

Nov 28, 2012

For my birthday weekend I wanted to find somewhere that was within driving distance from the city.  Cape May, NJ is a very nice beach town that is about 75 miles ( 1 hr 45mins ) from Philadelphia and I have only visited with the kids.  During the Fall, I thought it would be the perfect hideaway for much needed mommy R&R.   The city is filled with numerous B&Bs but those are bit invasive when you just want to get some R&R.

After multiple searches I found the Ocean Club Hotel, this property offers a number of room options.   I decided on an ocean side view room with a King size bed.    Once I arrived,  the hotel is located on Beach Avenue which is in close proximity to restaurants and the beach is directly across the street.    It offers a tiki bar, outdoor pool (wrong season), quaint restaurant and spa services ( a bit pricey).   The room offered a nice view however it was very simplistic.  No bathtub just a shower and a no minibar.   The room was equipped with air and heat but it was difficult to keep it regulated long term as the room went from too warm to too cool.   Overall, the room was soundproof so it was easy to get a good night’s sleep and quick nap in the afternoon.

After reviewing some of the other room selections, I think the best room to book is the penthouse suite.   I think for the room rate better deals are available in Baltimore or Washington via SniqueAway or Groupon Getaways.

Tween Chronicles: PUBERTY, OUCH!

Nov 28, 2012

Heeeelp as much as I want to deny it my male TWEEN is in the midst of PUBERTY!  There I said it and it still feels awkward!   I think this may last a moment.    I know I should just face reality but why?  Please someone tell me why?   My TWEEN proceeded to discuss with me an aspect of puberty that should only be shared with a male. ……I told him to HALT put on the brakes! and pick up the phone and call the other parent, please, please!   What does he do?  sent a TEXT to arrange the discussion, what is wrong with this picture?   It is ridiculous how this mode of communication has no level of urgency.    He was hesitant about sharing with the other parent but I reassured him it is a natural part of life and definitely nothing to be ashamed of!   I think I am on the right track, petrified but on the right track!   I think for moments like this he deserves a face to face, not FACE TIME or a TEXT MESSAGE!

One thing I know for sure about parenting,  it is not for the faint at heart!  There is no perfect timing or schedule, as a parent you have to deal with the challenges as they come.    We may want our children to stay our babies,  that is fighting the inevitable!   My TWEEN is so computer savvy but I think some topics warrant conversation and not a session of perusing the internet to get the answers.

My preference is not to intervene and allow my TWEEN  to have the much needed discussion with the other parent.    What are your thoughts on effectively raising a boy child?

Tween Chronicles: Happy 12th Birthday & Braces On

Nov 27, 2012

It’s been a while since my last update on my tween.  Since that time he has celebrated his 12th birthday.   I see him coming into his own as far as his level of independence and  how he handles his peers.    Now this is not to say that I no longer have to remind him on the basics of proper grooming .  This may never end! or least I hope it will!

The one highlight is the addition of braces.  These are a year over due as I learned last year that all of his teeth were out before his 11th birthday.  Well, better late than never and when a child has a pretty bad overbite time is of the essence.   My tween was extremely excited before the braces were put on and I guess that’s a part of being a child.   He was all smiles outside of the orthodontist’s office but once he arrived home I wanted to go out the back door.   The complaining about the pain was excruciating for me.  If only he read all the information from the office his agony would have ended sooner than later.   After multiple warm salt water rinses and acetaminophen the worst was over until he started eating and realized some foods required bite size portions.   I felt like his braces were a right of passage as I had to endure the same agony.

He is finally breathing again and my head is no longer throbbing from the complaints. There is the every now and again threat to remove the braces himself!  I ignore and move on to the next drama……..

Square Peg Restaurant

Nov 26, 2012

I love to try different restaurants in the city, as I am always in search of the best dining experience.   For me to select a restaurant, I scoured the web to see the website and then I peruse the menu.  The first item that stood out was the calamari on the appetizer menu and there was the Cheesesteak Pot Pie, ahhhhhhhh.  Although I am Philly born and raised I am not the average cheesesteak afficiando.   My yearly cheesesteak quote is maybe 2 cheesesteaks and I started to indulge in the chicken cheesesteak which is probably some violation for real cheesesteak lovers.

One of my classmates from grade school, high school and college wanted to do a night out so I selected the Square Peg restaurant.   The restaurant is located at 10th & Walnut on the corner.  There are multiple parking lots in and around the area or on street parking if you’re lucky enough to find a meter.    We started our meal with the calamari, which is served with long hots(peppers) on the side and honey aioli mustard.   Next, decided to order the hoagie dip(which I previously tried at a office function), this is ham, salami, pepperoni, cheese, red peppers, tomatoes, roasted garlic mayo and served with soft bread slices.

It was absolutely delish! and I highly recommend.   My entree was the Cheesesteak Pot Pie, this is filled with ribeye steak, potatoes, fried onions and homemade whiz(cheese) with a puffed pastry.  Another high recommendation.  I love restaurants that offer a variety of appetizers, main dishes and amazing cocktails.    The restaurant also has breakfast selections served all day.

Oh, and my cocktail selection was a Blueberry Elixir!  Now this is the cocktail for you if you prefer sweet with a splash of  alcohol.   This restaurant is definitely worth a second visit.   The menu offers very unique dishes even breakfast items served all day.
