I’m usually a planner but on the Sunday before Memorial Day thanks to @tomikabryant suggesting the kids and I go somewhere for the day. I packed up their beach stuff and we hit the road for REHOBOTH BEACH, DE.
From Philadelphia, it is about an 1hr and 52minutes depending on traffic I- 95 to I- 495 to RT 13 and Rt 1…I believe the tolls were about $4.50 and no need to worry about gas as there are Wawa gas stations at every other highway exit.
It was my first visit to Rehoboth so I wasn’t sure what to expect, I did know about the outlets. I believe there are over 100 so in the event the beachcombing gets a little boring there is always outlet shopping and there is no sales tax in DE.
The main street is Rehoboth Beach Avenue, I quickly learned that a parking permit is probably the best idea for parking. Rehoboth Beach Avenue is lined with parking spaces on both sides in either direction. You can park on the street in a numbered parking space and there are meters for each section of spaces. The metered parking is $1.50/hr so bring plenty of quarters change machine only accepts quarters). Tthere are change machines every few blocks that dispense quarters using $1 or $5. Now I know if we are going to stay for longer than a day to get a parking permit so there are no worries about getting back to the car to fill the meter.
The kids were able to enjoy a few moments in the icy water but for them it was fun. After the beach we had to get my favorite treat, FUNNEL CAKE now! (guilt later). Unfortunately all the hotels were booked for the weekend so we had to grab dinner and drive back. I had no energy to search for any hotels outside of the area…
I always like to leave with foods that are famous in a specific area, so we stopped at Fisher’s Popcorn and Dolle’s (Salt Water Taffy) and Ibach’s Candy (Milk Chocolate Turtles) (Chocolates or everything coated in chocolate you can think of)
We decided to eat at Catcher’s Seafood, I guess the fact the restaurant was empty inside was an indication of the service???? Some of the customers were dining outside which I think offered better service than the inside service. I like any place that offers a kid’s menu. The kids ordered their usuals- hot dog with fries & chicken fingers with fries plus lemonade. I’m a seafood fan and of course since we were so close to the Maryland border I had to have a crabcake. I quickly learned that Eastern Shore Maryland favors blue crab vs. my favorite jumbo lump crab. It was a favorite and I was quite disappointed. I thought the service in the restaurant was extremely slow and very unorganized especially when I wanted to pay our check. There are so many restaurants to choose from that on my return we will definitely have time to do research on the top list of restaurants.
Oh and if you’re in need of a clean public restroom (at least I can say the women’s room) go inside of The Shops at the Pearl (right across from the Grubbs Grocery store) on Rehoboth Beach Avenue.
You really have an awesome time with your kid. For my family last memorial day we had celebrated it at home together my kids and husband. We had picnic in our front yard and we grilled barbecue. We were enjoying the celebration of Memorial Day in just near in our house. You too have an awesome beach experience with your kid.
