What Is the State of our Schools?

Apr 26, 2012

For us who surf the net to read our daily dose of news across the country, it never ceases to amaze me how much violence there is within schools.  In one month I remember reading about a grade school child shooting another child, the heightened circumstances of how bullying leads to suicide……What is the State of our Schools?   I pose this question in all seriousness.    My son is now a student in a new grade school.  Before he started I tried to warn him to avoid going to this school at all costs.   Well of course he did not heed the warning and was withdrawn from his previous school.   Well now he realizes what I meant and unfortunately the reality is in large tablespoon….

He was baffled by the constant use of profanity among the students in their daily interaction with one another, the lack of respect for the teacher who is anxiously trying to do her job, how students help themselves to another student’s possession with no remorse, the daily fights and the visits from police officers……What Is the State of our Schools? The continous disrespect and disparaging remarks has me floored that our youth would think to treat one another in this manner……What is the State of our Schools?  Is this what we can expect from their generation or is there hope?   How does a school change the mindset of such troubled minds?  One day on the playground a child’s shoes were tied together and on another day a child’s pants were pulled down…How and why do children act this way?    What is the State of our Schools?  What triggers this mean behavior?   I wish there was an instant solution and a silver lining but I feel discouraged the school dynamics will never change.    For my son, he is anxious for June to arrive….If nothing else I hope this experience gives my son a sense of appreciation for what you have in front of you!  What Is the State of our Schools?  Schools make efforts to promote anti-bullying environments but is the message heard or is it dismissed as a joke….  I applaud teachers who put their heart in to making a difference!

Spring Break Camp 2012 — Climb High!
April 2 – April 6

This week we’ll explore ways in which humans, animals and nature defy gravity. We’ll begin our week at the Schuylkill Center building airplanes, hot air balloons and paper rockets in search of the highest flying machine. A visit from our wildlife ambassadors on Wednesday will give us a glimpse into how raptors, owls and vultures can soar hundreds of feet above the ground. On Thursday, we’ll put our gravity defying skills to the test as we join Go Vertical Climbing Gym staff for a day of indoor rock climbing. With climbing for all ages and abilities this will be a day of fun, challenge and teamwork. On Friday, we’ll take our climbing skills to Ringing Rocks State Park. Here we’ll explore the boulder field and make these rocks sing with our rock hammers. We’ll talk about why these rocks have such a unique sound and hike to the largest waterfall in the area.

Cost: See above, with additional field trip fees of $15/day/child for the Thursday and Friday sessions.

For more information about these and other programs for children, please call 215.482.7300 x 110 or email scee@schuylkillcenter.org.

Check with your local YMCA, when I called one of my great friends she suggested checking with the Y.  I called the Y closest to home and unfortunately there were no programs offered for spring break.  The Roxborough Y saved the day and we just made the child max for Wednesday and Thursday.

Philadelphia Art Museum —-First Sundays

Apr 10, 2012

This was a great day to spend our Sunday……I decided to take the kids to the Philadelphia Art Museum for First Sunday..Adults pay what you wish and kids are FREE! I found parking for $10 so I was excited to see what the museum had in store for our visit.   When we arrived at the door, I was allowed to move up front in line since I had kids with me.

For adults you make a donation of any denomination and kids were free.  The museum had an event called Family Studio which offered the kids an opportunity to make their own books, either a pop-up version or a collage.   It as very organized in terms of the supplies and staff on hand to explain the book concept and answer any questions from the kids as well as adults.    After family studio, we walked through the museum and took in the American and European art.  My favorite was the abstract art, personal interpretation is mind blowing…

The museum offers art classes for children which I may look into further.   I would definitely do it again next month…..however I think next month should be a mommy only trip without being rushed.  I need to take in the Van Gogh exhibit, because during our visit the line was a bit long
