Pet Peeve-“Invasion of Privacy”

Invasion of Privacy : Is it just me?   What is an invasion of privacy?  After some digging,  I found this definition: intrusion on one’s solitude or into one’s private affairs. In the past week, I have seriously wondered how protected are we in terms of our privacy?   We use so many different modes of technology to communicate with one another:  email, cell phones, and social media sites.   The internet has provided an ultra-fast way to drive our communication as well as a medium to extract valuable and relevant information.   However, it also opens up the door for UNWELCOME GUESTS.     Although I love and embrace new technology,  I feel really squeamish about how much technology can expose us to the world.   We live in an age where we are buying shredders so that we can dispose of  confidential “hard copies”,  however I feel it is access to this information via technology concerns me.   After a discussion with a friend this week,  I realized her position on guarding the content of  private emails and how they can potentially jeopardize your future.     She also said anything that is personal and confidential should be discussed in another fashion.    I have to admit I never thought twice about sending “PRIVATE”(I use this term loosely) emails from my personal computer.   A lesson learned this week is definitely to be more diligent with protecting my privacy! by using a non-invasive way to communicate “private” thoughts.

You bring up some valid and relevant points. I’m all over the internet and I’m a bit guarded myself. I was very hesitant until recently about posting pictures of myself on social networking sites vs. using my business logo.

I am still NOT sold on 4 square. I don’t need everyone knowing where I’m at 24/7 and then some lunatic in my local community decides to pop up where I am and know what I look like and I don’t have a clue what they look like. That’s my worst fear!

I don’t use my full name on anything most of my profiles have my business name or Jen short for xxxxxxx! Lol! I pick and choose my networking sites carefully! As far as email is concerned… It’s mostly business and if I need to say something that personal, I’ll pick up the phone. I also do alot of IM. My chats are deleted automatically ever so often! We do need to be careful what we put out there in the cyber world because once it’s out there, it’s out there!

I’m very leery all of the technology and modern conveniences that we have. My BFF is in tech support at a big law firm and he is tasked with reading employee emails all day. Yes, all employees, every single email sent and received, all day, every day. Scary. I never send anything personal and/or confidential from work, but you are making me reconsider even sending those types of email from my home computer.
